What if connection is medicine?

What if one of the most important medicines we have isn't something you swallow?

What if it's connection?

In this week's episode of Master Stress with Dr S, I explore African Traditional Medicine and a concept at its heart:

Ubuntu.

"I am because we are."

It's the idea that our wellbeing is deeply connected to the people around us — that we don't exist as isolated individuals, but as part of a living network of relationships.

And surprisingly, modern science is beginning to catch up.

Research on loneliness, social connection, and nervous-system regulation is showing just how profoundly relationships can affect our health.

But this episode begins with another remarkable story.

In the late 1800s, Charles Stevens recovered from tuberculosis after receiving a plant remedy from a South African healer. More than a century later, the plant was identified as Pelargonium sidoides, or African geranium — and its therapeutic potential has since been investigated in clinical research.

It's one example of something much bigger:

Africa holds some of the world's oldest healing traditions, yet much of that knowledge remains under-researched, partly because colonialism disrupted the oral traditions through which it was passed down.

In this episode, we explore:

• the science behind African geranium and other traditional remedies

• why African Traditional Medicine has been so overlooked

• how Ubuntu connects with modern research on social connection and the nervous system

• and what our relationships may have to do with our health

Because perhaps we have become very good at asking:

"What can I do to make myself healthier?"

And forgotten to ask:

"Who am I connected to?"
