What if generic health advice isn't meant for you?
Sep 22, 2026
“Just take this.”
“Everyone needs more of that.”
“Try this supplement.”
“Fix your sleep.”
We’re surrounded by health advice that sounds universal.
But your biology isn’t universal.
In Part 2 of my conversation with Emma Beswick of LifeCode GX, we go deeper into nutrigenomics and one of the questions I think we should be asking more often:
What if the advice that works for someone else isn’t the advice your body needs?
We explore how specific genetic variations can influence the way we process neurotransmitters, respond to stress, regulate sleep, and interact with our environment.
Emma shares insights into MAOA variants, sometimes referred to as the “warrior gene”, as well as a GABA receptor SNP associated with anxiety — and why understanding these variations should never be about labelling yourself or creating fear.
It should be about having better information.
We also talk about something that feels incredibly relevant to modern life: our genetics have remained relatively stable while our environment has changed dramatically.
More information.
More stimulation.
Less sleep.
Different rhythms.
And then there’s the temptation to respond to every health concern with another supplement.
But more isn't always better.
Instead, we discuss looking at the bigger picture — including mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, methylation, sleep patterns, nutrient needs, and the interaction between your genes and your environment.
Perhaps the most important message from this conversation is this:
Your genetic information should empower you to make better decisions, not convince you that something is wrong with you.
Testing needs context. Results need interpretation. And health decisions need to be grounded in evidence rather than influencer trends or fear.
